Lady Gaga Announces New Album "Mayhem," Teases Grammys Single Premiere
Los Angeles, California (February 2, 2025)- Lady Gaga is about to unleash "Mayhem" on her Little Monsters. The pop superstar officially announced her highly anticipated seventh studio album on Monday, January 27th, sending fans into a frenzy.
Following a week of cryptic countdowns and sightings of striking black-and-white billboards in New York City featuring the album title and release date, Gaga took to Instagram to confirm the news. A cinematic video featuring spooky photographs and typed messages, set to a dark and intensifying soundscape, accompanied the simple yet powerful announcement: "MAYHEM coming March 7."
The album, consisting of 14 tracks, will be preceded by a new single and music video premiere during a commercial break midway through the 2025 Grammy Awards broadcast on February 2nd. This highly anticipated reveal promises to be a major event for music fans.
In a statement, Gaga described the album's genesis, revealing it stemmed from confronting her fear of returning to the pop music that defined her early career. She likened the songwriting process to "reassembling a shattered mirror," emphasizing the creation of something beautiful and whole, even if imperfect.
"Mayhem" marks Gaga's first pop album in nearly five years, following 2020's Chromatica, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. While Chromatica explored electronic and dance-pop sounds, "Mayhem" seems poised to delve into a more introspective and potentially genre-bending territory.
The new album is also preceded by the previously released singles "Disease," which reached No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the eight-week Billboard Global 200 chart-topper "Die With a Smile" with Bruno Mars. Additionally, it follows Harlequin, the companion album Gaga created for Joker: Folie à Deux, in which she starred alongside Joaquin Phoenix. Harlequin debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard 200.
Gaga had previously hinted at the album's pop direction, crediting her fiancé, Michael Polansky, as the inspiration behind her return to the genre. In a September interview with Vogue, she confirmed "Mayhem" was indeed a pop record, a direction encouraged by Polansky.
Further insights into the album's sonic landscape were offered in a December conversation with The Los Angeles Times, where Gaga described it as “leaping around genre in a way that’s almost corrupt.” She also revealed the album's overarching theme: love as the answer to chaos. Gaga explained that the songs were inspired by dreams and recollections of past decisions, suggesting a deeply personal and reflective project.
With its intriguing title, cryptic teasers, and promise of a genre-bending sound, "Mayhem" is shaping up to be a significant moment in Lady Gaga's career. The upcoming Grammy performance and the March 7th release date are circled on every Little Monster's calendar.
