REVIEW: I Never Met A Jerk I Didn’t Like…The One Woman Show

LOS ANGELES, CA -(RYM)- NEVER MET A JERK I DIDN'T LIKE is a one-woman performance by Tiffany Phillips and Directed by Kimleigh Smith playing for a limited run at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks.

This one-woman show exemplifies what “dating down” looks like in modern society for an ethnically ambiguous-looking Black woman and her poor choices with men.  The performance is interactive and raw, with vulnerability and unabashed transparency established from the beginning.  Tiffany seamlessly vacillates between hilarious portrayals of the “JERKS” she has dated and a detailed synopsis of her thought process and motivation in choosing to date them.

As an accomplished comedian, actress, singer, producer, and content creator, she has curated a production that showcases her talents and abilities and really allows them to shine organically with grit, humility, and humor.  It runs for a little over an hour and in that time, she has been able to jam-pack at least 4 distinctive and multi-faceted male “jerks” into the tirade of her relationship with these different men.  Though she admits the characters are loosely based on real people with some comedic license; as the audience, you are able to see the truth in them and as a woman, I’m sure some relatable moments as well.  As her Director, Kimleigh is also on hand to initially introduce Tiffany as they have an exchange with Tiffany in full character as her first “jerk” and it is a smart and funny way to get the performance started smoothly.

I enjoyed this show very much, and I believe Tiffany is a talented and dynamic performer that deserves the high praise she continues to get.  I NEVER MET A JERK I DIDN'T LIKE is worth the price of admission and will leave you feeling like you just took a trip down the yellow brick road of self-awareness and discovery.  She ends the show with a declaration of self-love and confirmation that making bad choices with men does not have to equate to a life of misery if you're able to get out of your own way and empower yourself in a way that the “jerks” never will!
